Western Mongolia

Kazakh eagle hunters, nomadic herding families, and the Altai’s highest peaks — Mongolia’s most culturally distinct region.

Western Mongolia is home to the country’s highest mountains, its Kazakh minority, and a living tradition of hunting with golden eagles. Centered on Bayan-Ölgii province and the Altai Tavan Bogd massif near the Russian and Chinese borders, this is the most remote and culturally distinct corner of Mongolia — reached by domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar, then by 4×4 into the mountains.

Why visit Western Mongolia

Western Mongolia is where Mongolia’s nomadic and Kazakh traditions are most visible day to day: golden eagle hunting, horseback herding, and family life inside a ger haven’t changed much in generations. It’s also the country’s most dramatic landscape — glaciated peaks, turquoise alpine lakes, and high steppe — packed into a single, relatively compact travel region.

Landscapes and experiences

  • Snow-capped Altai Tavan Bogd peaks, including Khüiten Peak, Mongolia’s highest point
  • Turquoise Khoton and Khurgan Lakes, framed by mountains
  • Potanin Glacier, Mongolia’s largest
  • UNESCO-listed petroglyphs at Tsagaan Salaa, some thousands of years old
  • Turgen Waterfall, one of Mongolia’s largest
  • Wide river valleys and high summer pastures used by nomadic families

Things to do

  • Meet a Kazakh eagle hunter family and see golden eagle hunting traditions firsthand
  • Trek or horseback ride across the Altai Tavan Bogd high country
  • Camp beside Khoton and Khurgan Lakes
  • Visit the Tsagaan Salaa petroglyph sites
  • Experience the Golden Eagle Festival or a Naadam celebration, depending on season
  • Stay with a nomadic family in a traditional ger

Best time to visit

Most travel happens from June to September, when mountain passes are clear and nomadic families are in their summer pastures. The Golden Eagle Festival takes place in early October; the eagle hunters’ winter migration runs from roughly February to April for those visiting in winter.
